But, this is not practical to implement due to how complex is the process of comparison. There's too little space to perform it correctly within the UI.
A script that examines the requirements for upgrading an item prior to allowing the item to be upgraded is an alternative option. The only exception is glyphs. These can be salvaged using the Black Lion Salvage Kit, or the Ascended Salvage tool.
The cost of upgrading an item could be gold and/or Dilithium, depending on the item type. In addition, many upgrades require Flightstones and/or crests. The amount of Flightstones and Crests required to upgrade an item is determined by the level of the item. Blizzard also sets a maximum level for upgrades. Upgrades to the highest level are costly especially when it comes to upgrading PvE equipment.
Item upgrades can also change a weapon's ammunition type or damage die size change its operative or unwieldy weapon's property, or alter the hand requirements. Certain upgrades can alter the appearance of the weapon.

Make sure to upgrade your equipment as quickly as you can, as upgrades get more expensive with time. If you're not able to afford the upgrade costs It's best to wait until you can. This will help you maximize your potential in the game.
